What Forms? The Top 5 Online Tax Software Programs
By now, you’re probably somewhat familiar with the wealth of online tax filing options that have become more common recent years because they offer a number of advantages over traditional paper tax returns. The move online will only accelerate as bandwidth increases and businesses and individuals continue to pare down their budgets. A quick primer on the benefits of online filing and the top five programs to help you do so follows.
Why File Online?
Where to begin? Few sectors of the economy have benefited more from widespread Internet usage than the tax preparation industry.
- Federal returns are free: If you have a relatively uncluttered tax return or just need to file a 1040-EZ, most online tax preparers will let you file your federal return for free. The IRS endorses this arrangement with its Free File Alliance program. Some services do charge for state returns.
- Accuracy: Online tax software is powered by complex algorithms that take the latest tax code changes into account. Some are so good that they’ll remind you if you’ve missed a credit or deduction that might lower your total tax burden.
- Support: E-filing shouldn’t remind you of that time you got lost in the woods without a compass. Most major tax preparers offer online chat features, 24-hour call centers and professionally-staffed branches to answer your questions.
So which online tax programs set themselves apart from the competition? Drumroll, please:
1. H&R Block
This company offers a painless free online filing service as well as several paid services that come with added perks like “audit support” and a guarantee that H&R Block will maximize your refund. If you have a big family, the downloadable H&R Block At Home program lets you file five returns for the price of one.
Formerly of the large, bulky CD-ROM boxes taking up space at office supply stores, TurboTax is now also a streamlined Internet service that specializes in complex business tax returns. Business filings can cost over $100, but you may miss many times that amount in deductions and credits if you go it alone.
Then again, TaxSlayer makes TurboTax look exorbitant. Federal returns are $9.95, unlimited state returns are $4.95 each, and military personnel always file for free. The drawback: The site’s design is amateurish and you’ll have to wade through a number of hard sells before you can file.
Although it doesn’t offer a free filing option, 1040.com lets you file unlimited state returns for $14.95 and provides a full-service filing for under $50. It also maintains a solid e-mail assistance program staffed by folks more interested in saving you money than selling you services.
5. CCH CompleteTax
CompleteTax may have the most user-friendly interface of any e-filing service. Its proprietary error-finding program lets you fix mistakes in your return without losing your work, and it maintains a free “resource center” for confused filers. The drawback: You can’t file multiple state returns with CompleteTax.
As e-filing becomes easier, more dependable and less expensive, you’ll want to choose an online tax filing program that provides as many of the benefits of an in-person tax professional as possible. For one reason or another, these five have separated themselves from a crowded field. Choose wisely this tax season!

As hundreds of thousands of companies now vie for their share of the market with competitors from around the world, businesses are constantly looking for ways in which to set themselves apart from their counterparts. While establishing a solid presence in standard media streams is a given, many firms are opting to go for less tried and slightly more risky means of getting their product or service out there. Often branded as out of the box ideas, atypical or surprising campaigns have the potential to help a company break out of a mold and even go viral, spreading rapidly across both social and traditional media networks. The following is a number of suggestions to help your business break out of the box.
Give Away Custom USB Flash Drives
A great way to turn people on to your business is to give them a free gift in the form of a USB flash drive, customized to include your logo and contact info on its outer casing. People love USB drives as they always need to carry important files on them and what better way to get into your customers’ heads than to make your USB flash drive vital to their working life. You can also include samples of your work, webpages that work offline and even custom start up screens and wallpapers. Cheaply produced and remarkably durable, flash drives are a trendy, practical and effective marketing solution.
Sponsor a Local Sports Team
Depending on your budget, sponsoring a local sports team is another great way of getting your name out there. It doesn’t have to be a professional or amateur team, just as long as they play in a league with other teams, the more the better. Ideally the team you sponsor would travel quite a bit to games around your area or out of state. This movement guarantees that your name will be spread far and wide. Little league or high school level teams also make great sponsor targets and you will benefit from the publicity of having given to an educational institute. Sponsors often team up with the school for charity events and these are always covered by the media.
Hold Exclusive Sneak Peek Events
Everyone who hears the about an exclusive event wants to be invited, and holding one of these can drum up a lot of media attention and customer interest. Sneak peek events allow selected customers, often with a long history of custom and loyalty, to attend a preview of upcoming products or services, often receiving samples. Send out teaser emails a month or so before to get people talking and soon everyone will be abuzz with talk of your event. Obviously, you should be aware of the level of hype created and try to live up to it. If it doesn’t go well, your company could be embarrassed. Done correctly, however, your event will be a great success.
Run a Business Card Raffle
Everybody wants to win a raffle, so it’s a great exercise for getting new leads on prospective customers. With their business card as an entry ticket, you are able to get a great range of contact details, none of which are duplicates. If you are particularly sneaky, you may be able to arrange for the most promising clients to be the luckiest, if you know what I mean.
Growing your business can be difficult and hit and miss at times, but if you are willing to take a chance at unusual ideas that are out of the box, you may be happily surprised by the results.

Online colleges offer students of all ages the opportunity to earn a college degree without ever having to leave the comfort of home. New online colleges are popping up every day, making it difficult for potential students to know which one to choose. Here are six tips that will help you select the right online degree program for you:
The very first thing you should look for when selecting an online program is accreditation. Accreditation means that the school has passed and maintained a rigorous set of standards. If you should choose to transfer to a different college down the road, accreditation can ensure that your credits transfer with you. If you stumble across a college that isn’t accredited, cross it off of your short list and continue looking.
Affordability is a huge factor in any college that you choose. While many online programs are more cost-effective than traditional brick and mortar colleges, some aren’t. Make sure you find an online college that you can afford. You don’t want to pay for one semester only to find out that you can’t pay for the next.
Many online colleges accept financial aid in the form of grants and loans. Some online colleges don’t accept financial aid at all. If you need help paying for school, you’ll want to look for an online program that will allow you to use government funds to pay for your education. Alternatively, you can find out if your employer offers college reimbursement. You will typically have to pay for your classes and wait for your passing grades to be posted before your tuition is reimbursed.
4.Choice of Majors
Most college students change their major at least once. Make sure that the online programs you are looking at have a variety of majors to choose from. If you decide that you aren’t happy with your initial course of study, you won’t want to have to go through the hassle of transferring to a different school. Many accredited programs offer a choice of majors, ensuring that you can change your degree program with relative ease.
Find out what the requirements are for the online programs that you are considering. You should know how long it will take you to complete the program, if it is self-paced, and if it is entirely online. Some online programs require that you take final exams on campus and others allow them to be proctored. Find these things out before you make your final decision.
Look at websites like Studentsreview.com to find out what others are saying about the programs you are looking at. If you take reviews with a grain of salt, you’ll be able to get a feel for how the schools operate and the level of satisfaction that they provide their students. You can also Google the name of the online programs, followed by “review,” to see how pleased students have been with their experiences.
Choosing an online program is not a decision that should be made lightly. Treat this process just as if you were choosing a traditional college. Look for schools that are accredited, have a variety of majors, and a great reputation. If you look for these things, you’ll find it much easier to decide on the perfect program for you.

How to Market Your Domain for Revenue
As an insurance broker, you have a great deal of competition to contend with. How do you stand out from the crowd and turn a profit? The answer lies in your ability to market your business. You are virtually guaranteed to see revenue if you learn how to market your domain effectively. Here are five tips to make money with your domain:
Combining your domain name with your logo is a great way to direct traffic to your site. Think of the powerhouse online retailers Amazon and Overstock. Both have utilized their domain in their logo effectively. Amazon.com and Overstock.com are both readily recognizable. Using your domain name in your logo will lead to direct navigation traffic, ensuring that visitors land on your site before the competitor’s.
Pay close attention to how you display your domain name on any advertising materials that you use. Whether you utilize business cards, flyers, brochures or newsletters, your domain name should be crisp, clear and easy to read. Never include http://www. In your ad copy and make sure that it is printed in an attractive font. Use large type and capitalize each word to make your domain name the focal point of your advertisement.
Whether you choose to join Twitter or Facebook as a way to promote your business, the way you use your domain name can make or break your web traffic. Remove the http://www portion of your URL to make your domain name more readable. You can use your domain name as your Twitter handle or your Facebook profile name. Unlike Twitter, Facebook allows you to list multiple URLs on your profile page. Make sure that your most important link is listed first as this is the one that will receive the most hits.
Instead of using @yahoo.com or @gmail.com, use your own domain name as your email address. For instance, if your domain name is Insurance.com, you could choose an email address like John@insurance.com or JSmith@insurance.com. Not only is this an effective use of your domain name but your email address will be easily remembered. You can set the email on your domain to forward to your Yahoo or Gmail account, and you can set your domain email as your default reply-to address.
Speaking of email, are you using your domain name in your signature? If you aren’t, you’re missing a prime opportunity for free advertising. In your signature, directly under your name, you should include your domain name. Unlike using your domain name in social media and advertising, do include the http://www. This will turn your domain name into a hyperlink for your email recipients. Use your domain name in your signature for both personal and professional emails; you never know who your emails will be forwarded to!
These five ways of marketing your domain name are a small sampling of the dozens of methods that there are. By using your domain name on advertising materials, in social media and as part of your email address, you’ll be making use of proven marketing methods. If you can learn how to market your domain name effectively, your business will be turning a profit in no time!
